FSSAI OR FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARD AUTHORITY OF INDIA

FSSAI stands for Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The FSSAI Act was passed in 2006. Since then it controls all the business activities that are related to food. FSSAI license is mandatory for all existing food business or any business who want to start food related activity. All the food manufacturers, suppliers, restaurants, wholesalers, retailers, distributors and any other businesses that are engaged in food related activity must acquire FSSAI license. Also the business has to follow FSSAI Guidelines, Rules and regulations. FSSAI ensures food safety to ensure the health and family welfare of common people. Rita Teotia is the current Chairperson for FSSAI and Pawan Kumar Agarwal is the current Chief Executive Officer for FSSAI. The main headquarter of FSSAI is located at Delhi. It also has its 6 Regional Offices located at Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cochin and Chennai. The most common confusion among FBO’s is what type of food license they need to obtain.

Type of Food License

Basic Food License

If your business has an Annual Income less then Rs. 12 lakh you need this Basic Registration which has a validity of 1 to 5 years. Fees of this license is Rs. 100 per year.

State Food License

If your business has an Annual Income between Rs. 12 Lakh to 20 Cr. You need this State License which has a validity of 1 to 5 years. Fees of this license is Rs. 2000 to 5000 per year it depends upon your production.

Central Food License

 If your business has an Annual Income more than Rs. 20 Cr. You need this Central License which has a validity of 1 to 5 years. Fees of this license is Rs. 7500 per year.
